Interim managers and scientists
The use of interim human resources is now standard practice in all sectors and in many countries. The Netherlands and the UK were in the forefront of the concept, but the use of non permanent appointees is now utilised very widely. The situations where interims are used include new product or new market entry; maternity or sickness cover; medium-short term scientific projects; in relation to mergers/acquisitions; turnarounds or restructuring.
There is a significant difference between the interim manager/scientist and the consultant. Simplistically consultants advise and do not implement. Interims operate in the same manner as a full timer – ie consider, decide and implement. The People in Health talent pool often fulfills both functions and the importance of successful implementation after advice, counsel and guidance is crucial. People in Health interim managers/scientists will be experienced and can ‘hit the ground running’. Because they are real specialists in their particular fields, the degree of orientation required is lessened.
Interims are professionals who prefer the diversity of the project by project lifestyle, with all the associated ups and downs, to the more secure permanent job. Because of this they can bring a very wide range of experience to an organisation.
